Proven Benefits of Dryland Training

Question- What does a hockey specific off ice training program have to do with improving your on-ice performance?   Answer: EVERYTHING!!!!

Don’t take my word for it.  Here is what Jack Blatherwick, arguably the best hockey trainer in North America, thinks about training, especially regarding kids!

"What does sprinting or jumping have to do with hockey?

The answer comes in several parts, but the bottom line is, whatever makes you a faster sprinter will automatically make you a faster skater. In testing thousands of players we learned there was a very constant relationship between running speed and skating speed. On every team, from bantams to college, Olympics, and pros, the fastest skaters are likely to be the fastest sprinters.

Likewise, those who jump the highest are likely to be faster skaters. This in itself would not prove that sprinting and/or jumping will make you skate faster, so we tested college players who trained this way for five weeks. They improved significantly in running speed, jumping ability, and leg power on a bicycle.

More importantly, their times on skating tests of speed, agility, and endurance were significantly better, even though they had only skated twice a week in captain's practice scrimmages. Another college team that did not run, but had captains' practice five days a week did not improve in any skating test.”

Still not convinced? Here is more proof!!

We did our own experiment at the
Burnsville Training Center last summer.

We asked 4 Peewee players, of equal ability, to take part in the experiment.

One of the players came to the training center every other day for 6 weeks and did a structured hockey specific workout. This workout lasted about 45 minutes.

The other 3 players came to the training center over the same 6 weeks but did not dothe structured workout. They trained as they normally would.

All 4 of the players were tested (sprinting, long jump and high jump) before, during and after the 6 week period.

The results were amazing. The three players who did not perform the hockey specific training program did not show any improvement. The one player who did the hockey specific workout improved in all tests!!

Come to the training center and see all the details!!!!

So…If you want to

1. Be a faster skater?
2. Be a better goal scorer?
3. Be a better stickhandler?
4. Be a more creative passer and playmaker?
5. Have fun hanging out and working out with other dedicated
Burnsville Hockey Players?

Here is your opportunity!!

A hockey specific training program has been set up for all Squirts/U10s, Peewee/U12s and Bantam/U14s. This program consists of hockey specific workouts for each level as well as periodic testing to measure improvement.

Also, to add a little fun and healthy competition, awards will be presented at the end of the spring session to athlete(s) at each level (Squirt/U10, Peewee/U12 and Bantam/U14) in each of the following categories.

1. 10,000 puck club
2. Stickhandling club.
3. Attendance club (x amount of tc visits).
4. Improvement through testing.

This program will start the week of April 3rd.

Specific testing and workout times will be posted soon in the Training Center Section of the BHC Web Site.

So, come to the training center for the spring training program and dedicate yourself to becoming a better player.  Once a week won’t cut it and 5 times all spring won’t help. It takes consistent effort to improve, so if you are serious about being a difference maker next year, get serious about your training and come to the Training Center!
