FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Is the sport of hockey safe for my child?

Yes. Hockey players wear more protective equipment than any other sport. A study has shown that ice hockey injuries ranked after both basketball and soccer in emergency room visits related to sport and recreational activities. Youth hockey is a different game than the NHL. With a different set of rules in place, youth hockey places a stronger emphasis on sportsmanship and friendly competition. Contact, including checking is not allowed until the Bantam level (age 14 & 15) but NO fighting is allowed in youth hockey.

Who will be coaching my child?

Teams are generally coached by volunteer parent - coaches. All coaches must undergo a standard background check as required by Minnesota Hockey. Coaches must be certified by attending coaching clinics and completion of the USA Hockey SafeSport off-ice safety coursework at the start of each hockey season. If you are interested in becoming a coach, please email mites@burnsvillehockey.com or slarsonbhc@gmail.com

What will it cost for my child to play hockey?

Ice hockey can be expensive -but the costs are much lower for Mites than for the older groups. Fees for Mite skaters are $150.00 for first year (new to the program) mites and $310 for all returning mites. Mite Plus/U8 team costs will be higher.

Mites do not pay additional "ice" bills like older levels do. Ice bills are now paid electronically 4 times a season (1st payment is actually registration) and range from $300-$550, depending on the level. Older players have more ice time.

All teams typically collect team fees, which are used for team events, team branded clothing and things the team does. These are typically $100-$200 but it varies by team and level.

The Hockey Moms group holds a raffle each year, The required buy-in is $150. You can sell the tickets or keep them for yourself. The raffle tickets are distributed in early December and the drawing is in late January. The Hockey Moms also holds apparel sales several times a year.  Check out  the Hockey Moms page for more information
